DevOps is not a job title or a single tool. It is a set of cultural and technical practices that shorten the distance between an idea and production. This lesson explains the CAMS model, why Development and Operations used to clash, what a modern delivery pipeline looks like, and how feedback loops keep systems reliable.

CAMS is a checklist, not a certification. Culture is often drawn as the innermost ring because it enables the rest: without trust, people hide problems and automation becomes a scary black box. When you hover each ring, connect the bullet items to something concrete in your team (e.g. “open metrics” → a Grafana dashboard both dev and SRE use).
Classic organizations split “builders” (developers) and “keepers” (operations). Developers wanted speed; operators wanted stability. Releases became rare, risky big-bang events. DevOps reframes the goal: safe speed—many small, tested changes with automation and observability so both sides see the same truth.
Reading the table: each row is one tension. The middle column is how silos typically behave; the right column is the DevOps-aligned alternative. Use it to audit meetings: if you still hear “throw it over the wall,” that row is not done yet.
The First Way is about throughput of the whole system (value stream), not local efficiency. The Second Way is about shortening and strengthening feedback from production back to design. The Third Way is experimentation: reserves capacity for improvement and safe trials (feature flags, canaries).
