In life, things happen in order. First we wake up, then we wash our faces, then we have breakfast. You cannot have breakfast first and wake up later! The words "before" and "after" help us tell what came earlier and what came later. "First" and "then" describe the order of steps.

Look at the chain of actions. Which comes first — waking up or breakfast? Of course, waking up. Which comes later — brushing your teeth or going to school? Right: school is later, because you brush your teeth first.
