Addition combines numbers; the result is called the sum. Subtraction finds the difference. In Grade 2 we add and subtract numbers up to 100: without regrouping across ten and with regrouping across ten. You can work mentally, on a number line, or in columns.

minuend−subtrahend=difference\text{minuend} - \text{subtrahend} = \text{difference}
In addition: add ones to ones, tens to tens
In subtraction, if there are not enough ones, regroup one ten
