A mixed number: amn=a+mna\frac{m}{n}=a+\frac{m}{n}. With the same denominator: - when adding, add whole parts and fractional parts separately; - when subtracting, subtract whole parts and fractional parts separately; - regroup across the whole if needed (rename 1 or borrow 1). If the fractional part of a sum becomes improper, rename the whole part. If the fractional part is too small to subtract, borrow 1=nn1=\frac{n}{n} from the whole part.
