History of Thai writing

Modern Thai writing dates to the 13th century and is traditionally linked to King Ramkhamhaeng the Great (1239–1298) of the Sukhothai kingdom. According to the Ramkhamhaeng inscription (1292), he developed the Thai alphabet based on writing traditions already present in the region.
