Functions of particles in Thai

Particles in Thai (คำช่วย /kham chûai/, lit. “helper word”) are invariable function words that play a key role in modality, pragmatic nuance, syntactic relations, and social marking. Unlike content words, particles carry no lexical meaning but add information about the speaker’s intention, politeness level, attitude toward the listener, degree of certainty, confidence, and exclamatory force.
