Cuando tu rama está detrás de la principal, tienes dos caminos. La primera es “introducir” cambios (fusionar) creando un nuevo nodo. El segundo es "reproducir" sus confirmaciones además del nuevo trabajo en principal (rebase). El segundo limpia el historial del proyecto, como si acabara de comenzar con el código más reciente.
