El correo electrónico utiliza SMTP para enviar mensajes entre MTA (y desde MUA al servidor de envío), mientras que IMAP/POP3 permite a los clientes extraer mensajes de un buzón. Las implementaciones modernas utilizan STARTTLS o TLS implícito (puertos 465/993/995): el SMTP de texto sin formato en el puerto 25 es solo para servidor a servidor.
