Consonant sounds

Thai has a broad consonant system: plain and aspirated, voiced and voiceless sounds. Modern writing uses 44 consonant letters, but there are far fewer phonemes — about 21 — because several letters share one sound and differ only in historical and tonal role. Writing preserves traces of older phonology, so graphemic and phonetic systems do not fully align.
