Counting words in Thai are classifiers (ลักษณนาม, lakṣananām; colloquially also ตัวนับ, tuanap, “counter words”). They stand between a numeral and a noun (or replace the noun) and answer “how many of what kind” — people, books, cars, bottles. Without a counting word, a phrase like “three books” stays grammatically incomplete.
