Taux de variation moyen sur [x0;x0+Δx] (sécant) :
ΔxΔy=Δxf(x0+Δx)−f(x0).
La dérivée (si la limite existe et est finie) :
f′(x0)=Δx→0limΔxf(x0+Δx)−f(x0).
Géométrie : f′(x0) est la pente de la tangente à y=f(x) à (x0;f(x0)).
Physique : si x c'est le temps et f(x) est la position, alors f′(x0) est la vitesse instantanée à x0.
La dérivée peut ne pas exister : coin, tangente verticale, discontinuité
