Si f est allumé en continu [a;b] et différentiable sur (a;b), et f′(x)>0pour tousx∈(a;b), alors f augmente strictement sur [a;b] (de même pour f′<0 et diminution stricte).
Points stationnaires : f′(x0)=0 — « candidats » pour les extrema (souvent intérieur, si f′change de signe à proximité).
Théorème de Fermat (condition nécessaire) : si x0 est un extremum local à l'intérieur d'un intervalle de différentiabilité, alors f′(x0)=0 ou la dérivée n'y est pas définie.
f′(x0)=0 ne garantit pas un extremum local (f(x)=x3 à 0: f′(0)=0, mais il n'y a pas d'extremum — une inflexion là)
