Sur un intervalle fermé, une fonction continue atteint un maximum et un minimum. Candidats sur cet intervalle : • points de terminaison a,ba,b ; • points intérieurs où f′(x)=0f'(x)=0 ; • points intérieurs où f′f' n'existe pas mais ff prend toujours une valeur finie (coin, etc.). Ensuite comparez les nombres : maximum — max⁡\max, minimum — min⁡\min sur la liste finie de candidats.
Un maximum global sur R\mathbb{R} contre sur [a;b][a;b] sont des configurations différentes ; ne mélangez pas les intervalles ouverts avec [a;b][a;b]
