Microservices vs Monolith: When and What to Choose

Few architectural decisions carry more long-term consequences — and attract more cargo-cult thinking — than the choice between a monolith and microservices. The industry narrative of the 2010s said microservices were the obvious evolution beyond the monolith. The 2020s brought a correction: teams at Stack Overflow, Shopify, Prime Video, and others publicly described moving back toward monoliths or modular monoliths for significant parts of their systems. This lesson cuts through the hype in both directions, gives you a framework for making the decision based on your actual context, and shows what the viable options look like in practice.

ℹ️Neither monolith nor microservices is inherently superior. The right choice depends on your team size, domain complexity, operational maturity, and scale requirements — all of which change over time. The best architects make this decision explicitly, revisit it periodically, and avoid treating either option as a permanent identity.
