The 51% Attack and Network Security

A “51% attack” is a family of attacks where an adversary controls a majority resource of the consensus mechanism. In Proof of Work, this means controlling a majority of mining hash power; in Proof of Stake, it usually means controlling a majority of effective stake or the ability to finalize competing histories. The attacker can then attempt deep reorganizations and double-spends.
