Proof of Authority (PoA) defines consensus where the set of block producers is known and permissioned. Instead of paying for work (PoW) or locking stake (PoS), authorized authorities sign blocks. The identities of authorities may be tied to certificates, memberships, or operational registries. Because membership is controlled, many PoA networks achieve fast and deterministic finality.
