Service mesh: Istio and Linkerd basics
A service mesh adds a sidecar proxy (or node-level proxy) to every Pod to handle mTLS, traffic splitting, retries, metrics, and authorization without changing app code much. Istio is feature-rich and heavier; Linkerd aims for minimal overhead. The data plane moves bytes; the control plane pushes config.
