File Lifecycle: Untracked, Staged, Committed

Where are your files?

In Git a file does not have a single “saved / not saved” state: changes move through a chain of stages. That gives you control — only what you explicitly prepare (staging) goes into a commit, while draft edits stay in the working tree until you decide.
