Tags and versions: Pinning a release
Commits are a moving stream. But when you ship a mobile app or a library, you need to “stake” a specific state of the code. For that, Git has tags—non-moving bookmarks on particular commits. So other developers know how serious the changes are inside, we use the SemVer standard.
