Closing Streams and try-with-resources

An I/O stream is an operating-system resource: a file descriptor, a socket, a memory buffer. An unclosed stream is a resource leak. In a large application thousands of unclosed files can exhaust the OS and cause a crash. Java provides automatic resource management through try-with-resources.
