Conditional Expressions: if and when

if is an expression in Kotlin — it returns a value. That means you can assign val result = if (cond) a else b. The branches must be compatible types. when replaces long chains of if-else and is also an expression; you can match constants, types, or use arbitrary conditions with boolean guards.
