Archiving and Compression (tar, gzip, zip)

Archiving bundles many files into one stream; compression reduces size. tar is the Unix archiver — it does not compress by itself but pairs with gzip (common .tar.gz), xz, or bzip2. zip is both archiver and compressor and interoperates well with Windows tools.
