Filesystem Structure

On Linux everything reachable through the shell lives in a single directory tree starting at the root directory /. There are no drive letters like C:; other disks are mounted as subdirectories under /mnt or /media. The Filesystem Hierarchy Standard (FHS) documents conventional locations so admins know where to look for binaries, configuration, logs, and user data.

ℹ️Distros may place some files slightly differently, but /bin, /etc, /home, /var, and /usr are universal concepts. Learn the roles, not only the spelling.
