Managing Processes (kill, nice)

Processes communicate with signals. SIGTERM (15) asks politely for shutdown; SIGKILL (9) cannot be caught or ignored — use only when a process ignores SIGTERM. kill is misnamed: it sends signals, defaulting to SIGTERM. nice and renice adjust scheduling priority (higher nice = lower CPU preference).
