Terminal and Command Line

The terminal (or console) is a text interface to the operating system. You type commands, they run programs, and the system prints output back. On Linux this is the primary way administrators and developers install software, inspect logs, and automate tasks. The program that reads your keys and runs commands is the shell — most distros default to bash.

ℹ️Shell vs terminal: the terminal is the window (or virtual TTY) that displays text. The shell is the interpreter that understands ls, cd, and control structures for scripting. You can switch shells (bash, zsh, fish) while keeping the same terminal emulator.
