Users and Groups in Linux

Linux is multi-user: every process runs as a numeric user ID (UID) and primary group ID (GID). Human-readable names live in /etc/passwd and /etc/group; the kernel only sees numbers. Accounts separate privileges — a web server user should not own your personal files.
