When we add or subtract, sometimes there are more than 10 ones, or there are not enough ones to subtract. Then we need to "go across" or regroup through ten. For example,
8+5=8+2+3=10+3=13
First we make 10, then we add what is left. For subtraction: 13−5=13−3−2=10−2=8
First subtract down to 10, then the rest.Addition: make the first number up to 10, then add the rest.
Subtraction: subtract down to 10 first, then what is left.
Knowing number pairs that make 10 really helps.
