Properties of addition

Rules that help you add faster

Properties of addition are rules that always work. Commutative property: changing the order of the addends does not change the sum. For example, 3+5=5+33+5 = 5+3. Associative property: you can group two neighboring addends and replace them by their sum. For example, (2+3)+4=2+(3+4)(2+3)+4 = 2+(3+4). These properties help you choose a convenient way to add.
Commutative: a+b=b+aa+b=b+a
Associative: (a+b)+c=a+(b+c)(a+b)+c=a+(b+c)
You can add in any order that makes sense
Example: 7+8+3=7+3+8=10+8=187+8+3 = 7+3+8 = 10+8 = 18
