Multiplication: factors and product
Multiplication is a short way to add the same number several times. For example, 3+3+3+3=12. We can write that as 4×3=12. The number that repeats is a factor (here 3). How many times it repeats is also a factor (here 4). The result of multiplication is the product (12). The multiplication sign is × or ⋅.
Multiplication replaces adding the same addend several times
The first factor tells what we are adding
The second factor tells how many times we add it
The result is called the product
Find how many apples there are in all (by multiplying or by adding). "Reset" shows the same picture example again.
