Multiplying by 0 and 1

Multiplying by 0 and 1

When you multiply by 0, the product is always 0 — taking a number zero times means you have nothing, so you get 0. For example, 5 × 0 = 0 and 0 × 8 = 0. When you multiply by 1, the number stays the same. For example, 7 × 1 = 7 and 1 × 4 = 4. Learn these rules by heart; you will use them everywhere.

0 × a = 0
a × 1 = a
1 × a = a
