Dividing a sum and checking

To divide a sum by a number, you can divide each addend by that number and add the quotients —

(a+b)\div c=a\div c+b\div c

when

a

and

b

are both divisible by

c

with no remainder. For example:

(12+6)\div 3=12\div 3+6\div 3=4+2=6

. You can check division with multiplication:

6\times 3=18

, and we started with

12+6=18

— correct.

(a+b)\div c=a\div c+b\div c

Check:

\text{quotient}\times\text{divisor}=\text{dividend}

Example:

(30+15)\div 5=30\div 5+15\div 5=6+3=9
