Division with remainder

One number does not always divide another evenly. Then there is a remainder. For example, you cannot split 17 apples equally among 5 plates: each plate gets 3 apples and 2 are left over. We write: 17÷5=3  R 217\div 5=3\ \text{ R }2 (read “3 remainder 2”). Important: the remainder is always less than the divisor (r<br<b).
a÷b=c  R ra\div b=c\ \text{ R }r with r<br<b
Example: 20÷6=3  R 220\div 6=3\ \text{ R }2
The remainder cannot be greater than or equal to the divisor
