Units of area: dm², m². Ratios

A square centimeter (cm2\text{cm}^2) is the area of a square with side length 1 cm. A square decimeter (dm2\text{dm}^2) is a square with side 1 dm (10 cm). Since 1 dm = 10 cm, 1 dm2=10×10=100 cm21\text{ dm}^2 = 10 \times 10 = 100\text{ cm}^2. A square meter (m2\text{m}^2) is a square with side 1 m (10 dm or 100 cm). So 1 m2=100 dm2=10 000 cm21\text{ m}^2 = 100\text{ dm}^2 = 10\,000\text{ cm}^2. We use these units for floors, walls, and plots of land.
