Shares. Formation and comparison of shares. Finding the fraction of a number

A part of a whole is what you get when the whole is split into equal pieces. Each piece is one part. For example,

\frac{1}{2}

(one half),

\frac{1}{3}

(one third),

\frac{1}{4}

(one fourth). The larger the denominator, the smaller each part. To find a fraction of a number, divide the number by the denominator and multiply by the numerator. For example,

\frac{1}{4}

of 20:

20 \div 4 = 5

\frac{1}{2}

— one half

\frac{1}{3}

— one third

\frac{1}{4}

— one fourth
