A triangle is a figure made of three segments (sides) and three vertices. In this lesson we look only at side lengths and sort triangles into three types. If all three sides are equal, the triangle is equilateral. If exactly two sides are equal, it is isosceles (often drawn like a little “house”). If all three sides have different lengths, it is scalene. You can compare sides on a drawing (with grid squares or a ruler) or from the numbers in a problem.
Three sides — three segments between vertices
Equilateral: a=b=c
Isosceles: two sides equal, the third different
Scalene: a=b=c (all three different)
