A power is a short way to write a product of equal factors.
an is read “a to the power n”:
- a — base;
- n — exponent (how many times a is taken as a factor).
For example, 34=3⋅3⋅3⋅3.
Special names:
- a2 — square of the number;
- a3 — cube of the number.
For natural numbers in this lesson we use small bases and exponents and compute step by step.
an — product of n equal factors a
a2 — square, a3 — cube
The exponent counts the factors
Compute in sequence: first two factors, then multiply further
Square of a number: 122
