Division and fractions. Mixed numbers

A fraction arises naturally from division: if aa is divided by bb and the division is not exact, you get a whole part and a remainder. If a=bq+ra=bq+r (with 0r<b0\le r<b), then ab=q+rb\frac{a}{b}=q+\frac{r}{b}. A symbol like qrbq\frac{r}{b} is called a mixed number: - qq — whole part, - rb\frac{r}{b} — fractional part. Reverse step: qrb=qb+rbq\frac{r}{b}=\frac{qb+r}{b}.
Division with remainder links to fractions
ab=q+rb\frac{a}{b}=q+\frac{r}{b} when a=bq+ra=bq+r
Mixed number = whole + proper fraction
qrb=qb+rbq\frac{r}{b}=\frac{qb+r}{b}
