Adding and subtracting mixed numbers

A mixed number:

a\frac{m}{n}=a+\frac{m}{n}

. With the same denominator: - when adding, add whole parts and fractional parts separately; - when subtracting, subtract whole parts and fractional parts separately; - regroup across the whole if needed (rename 1 or borrow 1). If the fractional part of a sum becomes improper, rename the whole part. If the fractional part is too small to subtract, borrow

1=\frac{n}{n}

from the whole part.

Mixed number = whole + fraction

Same denominator: work with numerators

From a sum you may rename a whole part

For subtraction you may borrow

\frac{n}{n}
