To compare two decimal numbers, line up matching places as in column addition.
If there are different numbers of digits after the separator — you may append zeros on the right in the fractional part (12.5 and 12.50 are the same value).
Then compare places from left to right: whole parts, then tenths, hundredths, and so on — at the first place where digits differ you see which number is larger.
Align places; add trailing zeros on the right if needed
Compare left to right until the first difference
Equal values can be written in more than one way
Recall place names (before comparing)
