Relationship concept. Expressing a ratio as a percentage

A ratio of two quantities shows how many times one “fits” into the other or how they compare in size. You can write it with a colon (a:ba:b) or as a fraction ab\frac{a}{b} (if b0b\neq 0). You can simplify a ratio by dividing both numbers by their GCD. If the parts refer to one whole (a+ba+b), each part is a fraction of the whole; it is convenient to express that in percents.
a:ba:b and ab\frac{a}{b} — two notations for the same comparison idea
Simplifying: divide aa and bb by GCD(a,ba,b)
Share of aa in the sum a+ba+b — in percent: aa+b100%\frac{a}{a+b}\cdot 100\%
