When you add two negative numbers, add their absolute values and put a minus sign in front: (−a)+(−b)=−(a+b) for a,b>0.
On a number line this looks like two moves to the left: the point ends up farther from zero on the negative side.
The sum of two negatives is always negative
Add the absolute values: ∣x+y∣=∣x∣+∣y∣ for two negatives
On the line: both steps go left
