The concept of a quadratic equation. Incomplete quadratic equations

Definition and standard form
A quadratic equation has the form ax2+bx+c=0ax^2+bx+c=0, where a,b,ca,b,c are numbers and a0a\neq0 (otherwise the equation is linear, not quadratic). It is convenient to call aa the leading coefficient, bb the coefficient of xx, and cc the constant term. Any quadratic can be brought to this form: move everything to one side, combine like terms, divide by a common factor if needed. The general solution via the discriminant and the quadratic formula comes in later lessons; today we cover cases where roots are found more quickly.
a0a\neq0 is required
A root is a value of xx that makes the equality a true numerical statement
