Merkle tree — структура данных, которая превращает множество объектов в один дайджест, называемый Merkle root. Листовые узлы содержат хеши отдельных элементов (например, транзакций). Внутренние узлы содержат хеш от сочетания двух дочерних хешей (например, hash(left || right)). Корень зависит от каждого листа, поэтому изменение любой транзакции меняет Merkle root.
