Процессы общаются сигналами. SIGTERM (15) просит завершиться корректно; SIGKILL (9) нельзя перехватить — только в крайнем случае. kill отправляет сигнал, по умолчанию SIGTERM. nice и renice меняют приоритет планирования (больше nice — меньше претензий на CPU).
