CLAUDE.md is declared policy—what humans intend the agent to follow. Auto Memory (and files like MEMORY.md where your workflow uses them) capture emergent facts discovered mid-session: quirks of a legacy module, a teammate’s nickname for a service, yesterday’s workaround. Mixing the two without labels creates confusion about what is canonical.
