Classifiers and their use
The classifier system (ลักษณนาม, lakṣananām) is one of Thai grammar’s signature features. A classifier is a separate word used with a numeral (and sometimes หลาย, นี้, นั้น) before a noun or in place of it, marking the category of the referent: person, animal, flat object, container, etc. Without a classifier, a counted phrase sounds incomplete.
